(Bond Bridge Pro) Using a Sidekick with your Bond Bridge Pro

A sidekick can be configured as a keypad or a shade remote.  The Sidekick shade remote will control shades directly and can also be used  to control shade devices on a Bond Bridge Pro.  The scene keypad will control shades, fans, lights and generic devices on a Bond Bridge Pro.  Please see the information on the Bond Home site for instructions on how to configure the Sidekick Generation 1 and Generation 2.

Linking Sidekick Shade remote keys to BBP devices

Shade Operation modes

There are two methods a Sidekick can be used to control shades on a Bond Bridge Pro.

  • The Sidekick is able to control shades directly and when linked to a Bond Bridge Pro shade device, will allow the State of the shade to be update when using the Sidekick to control it.  This is what we call direct control.
  • The other method allows a key press on the Sidekick to control the shade through the Bond Bridge Pro.  In this mode that we call relay, the Sidekick does not directly control the shade.  This is beneficial if the motor technology is not supported by the Sidekick or the distance from the sidekick to the motor is longer than the Sidekick supports.

Direct motor control with a Sidekick

  1. Select the Sidekick you want to control a shade with.
  2. Choose the Sidekick channel you want to use to control the shade.
    1. Verify the Sidekick channel key directly controls the shade.
  3. Press Link channel to a shades.
  4. Choose the shade or shades you want to control, choosing Select all with include all from that location.
    1. Please note the shade selected should be the same one the sidekick controls.
  5. Select CONTINUE.
  6. Select DONE.

Using the Bond Bridge Pro to control the shade

This is what we call relay mode.

  1. Select the Sidekick you want to control a shade with.
  2. Choose a sidekick channel that is not paired to a shade.
    1. You can also set the Sidekick unit on a specific channel to only operate in relay mode.
      1. Single channel - Select the Sidekick channel and press menu+1+4+3+4+5 + stop
      2. All Sidekick channelspress menu+4+3+4+5 + stop
  3. Press Link channel to a shades.
  4. Choose shade or shades you want the Sidekick key to control.
    1. Please note the sidekick in this configuration does not directly control the shade.  This is useful if the Sidekick is too far from the shade motor to reliably control it.
  5. Select CONTINUE.
  6. Select DONE.

Operation explanation

Channel 1 is controlled by the Sidekick channel 1 key and the Shade device in the Bond Home application.  The Bond sync protocol between the Sidekick and Bridge keeps the Bridge updated on the state of the shade, plus makes sure only one of them sends a signal to control the shade.

Channel 2 does not control the shade directly and is using the Bond Bridge Pro to control the shade.  This is what we call Relay mode.  This is useful if the shade is too far from the location of the Sidekick or the motor technology is not available for the Sidekick.
