(Bond Bridge Pro) What is PoE

What is PoE on the Bond Bridge Pro?

Power over Ethernet is a way to provide power to a device along with the connection to a network.  PoE requires the device like the Bond Bridge Pro and the network switch to both have PoE capability.  In this situation, the single ethernet cable provides both connectivity to the network and Bond servers, but also provide the power to the Bond Bridge Pro.

A little information about Ethernet connectors and PoE.

If you look at an Ethernet cable connector you will see 8 contacts.  In some configurations for PoE, four of these are used for communication from the connected device to a switch, router, or modem.  The wires travel through the cable twisted together in pairs.  So 2 twisted wires and the associated contacts in the connector provide the information to the router.  Two additional twisted wires and the associated contacts in the connector provide the information from the router to the device.  This leaves 4 additional wires (2 twisted pairs) that can be used for other uses like power.

In other configurations (gigabit), all 8 connections are used to transmit and receive data.  The DC power also runs along the twisted pair because transformers separate the high frequency data signal from the DC power.

Even though the capability is present in the Ethernet cable for PoE, if the switch does not provide it there will be no power going to the device.  If you have a PoE switch and your device does not support it, you can still connect it.
